THE GIRL ON THE FLOOR ABOVE ME

(John Redgate)
Pop music! Gotta love the sound of Armand Morgan’s Rickenbacker 12 string. I hear a little Lennon-McCartney, and maybe Marshall Crenshaw here. Not surprising, perhaps, having worked with Marshall in Beatlemania in NYC, all those years ago.

It started when I parked
In her parking space that night
I swear I didn’t know it was hers
I had just moved in
Then around midnight
Knockin’ on my door, she was seein’ red
“This has got to stop”
That’s all that she said

And I knew it was love
For the girl on the floor above me
In my dreams, in my prayers
I’m in love with the girl upstairs

I had to wait a week
For our paths to cross once more
She was carrying a bundle of books
When she climbed the steps
And reached her door
She gave a little wave, I gave a little grin
Somewhere in my head she invited me in

And I knew it was love
For the girl on the floor above me
If she knew, would she care?
I’m in love with the girl upstairs

It could happen, she could fall for me
Yeah, maybe it’s meant to be

Now every time I hear
Her footsteps overhead
The reverie begins
When I fall into bed

‘Cause it’s true, I’m in love
With the girl on the floor above me
In my dreams, in my prayers
I’m in love with the girl upstairs
Yeah, on the floor with the girl above me
In my dreams, in my prayers
I’m in love with the girl upstairs
