ANNIE ‘N’ ME

(John Redgate)
A Turn of the Century tune. . .1901, that is. I favor Old Age music over New Age, and love a good waltz. I’m lilting!

Annie ‘n’ Me,
We were always a pair
Locked arm in arm,
Like a couple of kids at the fair
Strolling down on Main Street,
She used to laugh
When I’d introduce her
As my better half
But that was true,
I’m telling you

Was a Saturday night,
And the dance had begun
I walked in late,
With a feeling the night was still young
Looking up I saw her
Crossing the hall
She was very clearly
The Belle of the Ball
Taking a chance,
I said “Shall we dance?”

I can still remember,
As the band played our song
I pictured her as my wife
Later she told me she’d known all along
From that first dance on
We’d be partners for life

But when I proposed
I was holding my breath
Fumbling my lines
Like an actor who’s scared half to death
Sitting down beside her,
Ready to burst
Never coming close to
The speech I’d rehearsed
But my life was blessed
When Annie said “Yes”

Even now I can recall
The wedding so well
She wore a white satin gown,
I was in pinstripes, nervous as hell
With so many people
All gathered around… watching…

Annie ‘n’ Me,
As we waltzed up the aisle
I saw some tears,
But this photograph captured her smile
And now when I see sweethearts
Lost in a kiss
Or when I close my eyes
For a moment, like this
I can still see
Annie ‘n’ Me
